A tiny scratcher that your cat ignores has not saved useful space. Start by looking at the scratching that already happens: the surface, direction, location, and amount of room your cat uses.
The cat-first bit
Ohio State describes scratching as normal cat behavior. It recommends noticing surface and orientation preferences and providing a stable scratching surface that allows an appropriate stretch. Read the care guidance

01Observe before choosing a shape
Write down whether the scratching you see is upright, flat, or angled. Note the material and what is nearby. These observations create a more useful starting brief than a list of popular products. A horizontal cardboard option and an upright post solve different placement problems; the narrowest package is not automatically the best fit.
02Measure the base and the space above it
For an upright option, record the height and the full base dimensions. Check the surrounding area too: a base may slide under the edge of a table while leaving too little room to use the post. For a flat option, consider the floor space when the cat is on it, not just the dimensions printed on the box.
03Make stability a buying question
Look for the manufacturer’s setup instructions, surface requirements, and any fixing requirements. A photograph of a cat sitting beside a post does not show how it behaves under load. Do not invent a weight limit or assume a light base will stay put. If a product needs a wall fixing that your rental cannot accommodate, it has failed your brief even if its footprint looks ideal.
04Keep placement practical
Choose a location that is available when your cat wants to scratch and that does not block the normal route across the room. Record the first position so you can compare any later move. Keep a short note of actual use before deciding to replace the item. No scratcher can promise to protect every couch; a useful setup needs to suit the individual cat as well as the room.
A scratcher earns its footprint by being useful to your cat.
