“Renter-friendly” is a useful search term, but it is not a mounting specification or permission from your landlord. Separate the changes you can confidently make now from those that need a conversation or installation advice.
The cat-first bit
Cats Protection warns that open windows and balconies can create fall and escape risks. Access to a view does not make a window safe; window security needs a separate, suitable solution. Read the care guidance

01Make three columns
Label a sheet “moveable,” “permission needed,” and “not verified.” Moveable ideas might include rearranging storage or comparing the footprint of freestanding furniture. Wall shelves, drilled fittings, window attachments, and any uncertain supports belong in another column until their requirements are clear. The exercise stops a product’s marketing label from deciding what your home can support.
02Ask about the exact change
If you need permission, describe the product, intended position, fixing method, and what happens when you leave. Keep the reply with your installation notes. Do not assume a general permission to keep a cat includes permission to drill into a particular wall. Equally, permission alone does not prove that a fixing is suitable for that wall.
03Compare furniture by the whole footprint
For a freestanding option, record the base, room needed to use it, door clearance, cleaning access, and any anti-tip or anchoring instructions. “Freestanding” does not mean “never needs anchoring.” Check whether the product can be assembled, disassembled, and carried through your actual doorway. A compact carton can turn into an awkward object in a narrow hall.
04Think about the next move
Keep the assembly instructions and label the supplied fittings. Before buying, ask whether the item can be reused in a room with a different layout. You may decide that a simple, appropriate scratching surface and a quieter resting corner solve today’s problem better than a large system. A rental setup can be deliberate without being permanent, provided every part still works for the cat and the building.
A reversible change still needs a properly checked setup.
