The empty corner is not automatically the right corner. Before choosing a location, check what happens there during an ordinary day: the door shuts, a washer starts, someone passes through, or a cleaning cabinet needs to open.
The cat-first bit
Ohio State recommends a quiet, accessible litter-box location with enough room for comfortable use. A low overhead space or a difficult approach can make a spot unsuitable even when the box itself fits. Read the care guidance
01Make a short list of possible spots
Walk through your home and note two or three options. For each, record which doors need to remain open, nearby appliances, and the normal flow of people or other animals. Look at the location at busy times too. A bathroom that is quiet at noon may be inaccessible every morning.
02Measure the whole job
Measure the box you intend to use, then sketch it in the space with an open approach. Leave yourself a way to scoop without moving the tray each time. Check whether you can lift it out for a full clean without tipping it or dismantling surrounding furniture. Do not reduce the usable box size just to match an available gap.
03Test the location, not a promise on a listing
A product photo cannot show your doors, the angle of the approach, or the sound from your appliances. Use a paper footprint to compare locations while keeping the existing box available. Do not force your cat into an enclosure to demonstrate that it fits. Any proposed cover or piece of furniture should be judged by usable access and cleaning, rather than whether it hides the tray from a visitor.
04Keep a simple observation note
Once a change is appropriate, note the location, what changed, and how your cat uses the area. Avoid changing the box, litter, and location all at once just to make the room look different. If toileting suddenly changes, seek veterinary advice rather than treating it as an interior-design problem. The aim is a reliable bathroom for your cat, with a cleaning routine you can maintain.
Choose the accessible spot first. Make the room look good around it.
